2023–24 FOI Oklahoma Annual Awards Nominations Now Open

Freedom of Information Oklahoma, a statewide advocate for transparency, freedom of information, and First Amendment rights, announces the opening of nominations for its annual awards. Each year, FOI Oklahoma honors individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the cause of openness and transparency in the state.

Nominations are open year-round, with a deadline of February 23 for this year's awards cycle. Details and the nomination form are available at foioklahoma.org/awards.

“The awards celebrate those who have demonstrated a commitment to these principles, shining a light on the importance of transparency in a functional democratic society,” said Kurt Gwartney, executive director. “We also recognize, in a less celebratory fashion, those who obstruct transparency efforts.”

Nominations may be made in the following categories:

Marian Opala First Amendment Award

Named for the late state Supreme Court Justice Marian Opala, this award recognizes individuals who have promoted education about or protection of the individual rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Ben Blackstock Award

Named for retired Oklahoma Press Association Executive Director Ben Blackstock, this award recognizes a non-governmental person or organization that has shown a commitment to freedom of information.

Bickham-Hale Service Award

The Bickham-Hale Service Award is awarded to the volunteer or board member who provides outstanding service to FOI Oklahoma. It is named after FOI Oklahoma’s founder Sue Hale and longtime executive director Kay Bickham.

Sunshine Award

Recognizes a public official or governmental body that has shown a commitment to freedom of information.

Black Hole Award

Recognizes an individual, agency or organization that has most thwarted the free flow of information.

Whether it's through investigative reporting, advocacy, litigation, or public service, the contributions of these individuals and organizations are vital to fostering an informed citizenry and holding those in power accountable.
